GRADE 6 pupils from St James School for Girls and Boys got a taste of Zulu life recently when they visited Shakaland on an overnight visit.

Together with their teacher, they experienced life in a traditional Zulu village and met the chief. They also saw how spears and shields are made. Each child had a chance to try spear throwing as well as stick fighting. They met the sangoma and saw how beer was brewed and fermented. The children also had a chance to browse and buy some of the beautiful bead work jewellery. They were fed traditional Zulu food like samp and beans and rounded off their stay with marimba and drum performances and were treated to traditional dancing.

St James School for Girls and Boys is based in Greyville and is a non-profit school which is partly subsidised by funders locally and internationally.
