Holocaust Centre hosts international expo
An exhibit entitled Germany's Confrontation with the Holocaust in a Global Context will be open until the end of June.
THE Durban Holocaust Centre opened an international travelling exhibition, titled Germany's Confrontation with the Holocaust in a Global Context recently.
The guest speaker at the opening was Dr Horst Freitag, Ambassador of Federal Republic of Germany, and Dr Victoria Nesfield, one of the creators of the exhibition based at the University of Leeds, and Holocaust survivor and one of the children rescued by Englishman Sir Nicholas Winton, Hugo Marom, also attended as special guests.
The focus of the exhibition is not the history of the Holocaust, but on responses of post-war Germans to the crimes committed in their name: responses of silence, outrage, reconciliation and memorialisation, a topic often overlooked but vital to understanding Germany as a country today.
Towards the end of the exhibition, Germans’ efforts to face up to their nation’s past are placed in a global context alongside other countries and other ‘difficult pasts’. Germany's confrontation with its dark past is especially relevant to South Africa today as we continue to come to terms with our own painful history.
The exhibition will be open to the public until the end of June.
