A HOUSEBREAKING gang fired a shot at a motorist as it fled the scene of a burglary in Glenmore on Friday night.
Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said a passing motorist noticed the gang pulling out of a driveway in Bowen Avenue, in a silver car and tried to block their getaway.
“One of the gang members fired a shot at the motorist as they fled but fortunately there were no injuries,” he said.
Jackson said the gang had broken into the house at around 6.30pm after damaging a back gate to gain entry onto the property.
They forced open the front door and grabbed a laptop and a flatscreen television before fleeing the scene. Umbilo SAPS attended the scene of the crime.
Jackson said this was the latest in a spate of housebreakings in Glenmore over the past week where separate incidents were reported in Retief Place, Bowen Avenue, Kinmont Crescent and Grundle Road.
“Housebreakers broke into properties by forcing open gates and doors and in one case a burglar reached through an open window and opened the door to gain entry. Most of the incidents reported occurred during mid-morning and afternoon,” he said.
Items reported stolen included a gaming console, laptops, jewellery, iPads, clothes and televisions.
Jackson advised residents to ensure windows were closed and that the house alarm was armed during the day when no-one was at home.
“Housebreakers tend to stake out properties before striking to familiarise themselves with a resident’s movements and the property’s weak spots that allow for easy access and a swift getaway. We advise residents to take a walk around their properties to assess and attend to any vulnerable spots such as glass doors and louvre windows without adequate burglar bars, rusted or loose burglar bars and any thick bush that could provide a hiding place for intruders” he said.
