The community is urged to assist in finding the relatives of a man who was stabbed in Umbilo in April.

UMBILO SAPS carried out a number of arrests this past week.

According to Sgt Beverley Manqele, on 29 May, a man was arrested for breaking into a business in Umbilo Road.

“The owner locked his business and left. At around 1.15am a man was apprehended by a community member who witnessed him breaking into the business and stealing. The owner went to investigate what had been stolen and discovered coffee to the value of R900 had been taken. Entry was gained by forcing the door open,” she said.

The man was detained and made his first court appearance on 1 June.

On 25 May at noon, a man was arrested for housebreaking.

According to Sgt Manqele, the owner of the house in Oliver Lea Drive left home in the morning and received a call from a witness to say his house had been broken into.

“When he went to investigate, he noticed items such as dishes, a hack saw, spanner and a computer card, all to the value of R3 000, had been taken. Entry was gained by using a duplicate key,” she said.

A man was arrested for the crime and appeared in court on 26 May.

On 29 May, police arrested a suspect for general theft.

“The complainant saw the man stealing metal to the value of R300 from his business in Sarnia Road. He apprehended him and called the police for assistance. The man was detained and appeared in court on 1 June,” said Manqele.

Umbilo SAPS is also urging the community to assist in finding the family of a man was was killed in a stabbing.

On 1 April, the police attended a scene where Siboniso Mthembu, (25), from Highvlats, Roma Ohlokozi (Tafeni) area, was stabbed in the chest and died later in King Edward Hospital.

“We arrested the man who stabbed Mthembu, and the case is under investigation. The victim's body is at a government mortuary. We are urging the community to help us locate any of his relatives,” said Sgt Manqele.
