Shepard convicted of culpable homicide

Blayne Shepard was found guilty of culpable homicide for the death of Brett Williams, a rugby fan and former Royal Marine on Monday.

BLAYNE Shepard was found guilty of culpable homicide for the death of former Royal Marine Brett Williams in the Durban Magistrate Court yesterday.

Williams was beaten but court heard that he died as a result of a fall, outside Kings Park Stadium after a Super Rugby match between the Sharks and Melbourne Rebels, on 23 March 2013.

Blayne Shepard, his brother Kyle Shepard, Andries van der Merwe and Dustin van Wyk were initially accused of the murder, while Grant Cramer a friend of the group's was charged with assault.

Cramer had charges against him dropped and turned State witness, while charges against Kyle Shepard, Andries van der Merwe and Dustin van Wyk were dismissed in December 2014.

In a Facebook page dedicated to “justice for Brett Williams” since the incident more than two years ago, Williams’s fiancée, Louise Scott posted, “I have just been informed Blayne Shepherd's been found guilty of culpable homicide, sentencing to follow, OMG I can't believe it, this is Louise speaking to you, thank you so much for your continued love and support.”

Magistrate Trevor Levitt will begin sentencing in August.
