Crime app informs the community

The Berea CPF chairman has created an app to give the community access to emergency numbers and to keep them in the loop regarding crime in their area.

A NEW crime app has been developed which will help the Berea CPF and police keep abreast of crime trends and incidents in the area.

The app, called the Berea Emergency Directory, was created by Berea CPF chair, Grant Smith, who felt it was important for residents to have crime contact numbers on hand when faced with a situation.

“The app has over 45 local emergency numbers at your finger tips, including numbers for the SAPS, Metro Police, hospitals, security companies and more. Residents can scroll down and just press the number they want to call. I felt it was important for residents to have these contact numbers on hand, and for them to know what to do in a situation to get help,” he said.

The app was developed along with the relaunch of the Berea CPF website. Grant said the decision behind this was that there was a lot of information available on Facebook, however the site was more informative and could carry more information for residents.

The app is linked to the website and is similar to the Berea CPF Sector 2 Facebook page, to create continuity.

“The app can be used on a smart phone or Blackberry. Not only can residents have access to emergency numbers, there is a form where residents can report an incident which is a non-emergency, which will help get stats for the police. The police only respond if the incident is confirmed, but we need more information on incidents where police don’t attend, such as an attempted hijacking, which the CPF and police should still be notified about,” he said.

Grant said the site would be changed and updated and he hoped to add a crime map, showing the location of various crimes soon. “This is where the reports of incidents from residents comes in handy, as it will show a true reflection of what is happening in the area,” he said.
