BAT Centre refurbishment project kicks off

A minor disruption is expected for arts programmes and tenants at the BAT Centre.

THE BAT Centre, the arts and cultural centre in the Port of Durban, is undergoing a four-month refurbishment project carried out by port landlord and owner of the property, Transnet National Ports Authority.

The initial project is expected to run from July to November and will include upgrades to areas such as the restaurant, the Sipho Gumede Hall, the visual art studio, the Menzi Mchunu Gallery, the reception area and offices.

“During an assessment which we carried out last year it was decided to revamp the entire BAT Centre. However the initial work over the next four months is urgent and essential remedial work that will see minor disruptions to some of the BAT Centre’s service offerings, while we work to ensure the continued safety of the building,” said Port manager, Moshe Motlohi.

Civil and structural work will include repairing the roof, wall defects and staircases, while fire and electrical systems will also be upgraded.

Alvin Anderson, BAT Centre publicity coordinator, said the project was welcomed.

“Despite the expected disruption and temporary inconvenience we believe that it will be worth it to ensure that we can continue to promote and support the local arts sector in the future. We are depending on our loyal patrons and tenants to bear with us during this period and will endeavour to keep them updated throughout the progress of the operations,” he said.

Repairs are to be carried out in various phases to minimise disruptions.

The repair project means the centre will forego its annual Women’s Month events and will postpone the celebrations of its 20th anniversary in August until the refurbishment is completed.
