GLENWOOD Community Watch (GCW) is thrilled with the way Glenwood residents, security companies, Umbilo SAPS and the Glenwood Community Watch are working together to reduce crime in the area.
This close knit working relationship seems to be paying off. GCW along with the other security groups and residents have successfully apprehended three suspects who were arrested over the last three weeks.
Guy Perrins, Chairman of GCW said it was largely due to the neighborhood and security network systems the GCW have put in place over the last few years. There are about 400 residents and patrol members on the Crime Awareness Whatsapp Groups and these groups are purely for crime related issues. The residents post or call GCW immediately when the crime is occurring, even in the middle of the night. GCW then alerts its members and residents on the crime WhatsApp, Umbilo SAPS and neighboring Com Watches. The residents are then able to give info as to the location of the suspect as the suspect is moving through our area. A suspect was successfully arrested on Monday night after he had stolen a laptop and other items from a property in Ormiston Place, and was eventually apprehended at the intersection of Nicholson and Binns.
The “chase” took over an hour as the suspect jumped through the yards of Glenwood. The residents followed his progress by posting his location onto GCW’s WhatsApp group, and this information was immediately radioed to the members and in turn given to SAPS and the security companies who locked down the area around these properties.
GCW’s patrol sector extends from Francois to McDonald and Ridge to Umbilo Roads. All residents are welcome to join the mailing list or WhatsApp groups, whether they fall within the GCW footprint or neighboring sectors. If you would like to join, WhatsApp, sms or email your name, address, cell number and email address to 076 665 9144 or sector2communitywatch@live.co.za
“If you live within our sector and would like to join our patrols, drop us a mail or WhatsApp as we are always looking for new members. With the community , SAPS and security companies working together, we can only grow from strength to strength and successfully deal with this scourge that blights all communities!” said Perrins.
