Pilot sets plane down on North Beach
No fatalities were reported as Durban pilot makes an emergency landing on a Durban beach.
A pilot, taking a plane out on a test flight on Sunday afternoon, was forced to make an emergency landing on Durban’s North beach.
According to KZN EMS Robert McKensie, the pilot was returning to the airport when he ran into trouble and was forced to land the plane.
McKenzie said there were only a few people on the section of the beach where he landed the plane, and the pilot escaped unscathed.
“KZN Emergency Medical Services paramedics and fire fighters from eThekwini fire department responded to the crash. When paramedics arrived at the scene they found the 30 year old pilot safely out of the aircraft and talking on his cellphone with air traffic control. He was examined by an advanced life support paramedic from KZN EMS, and after recovering from the initial shock of the incident, it was confirmed that he had not sustained any injuries and he decided that he did not wish to be taken to hospital,” he said.
The cause of the emergency landing is not known but the incident is being investigated.
