Durban gears up for Shakespeare festival

Durban is ready to host this year's Shakespeare Schools Festival at the Playhouse.

DURBAN schools are set to get an enormous boost from this year’s Shakespeare Schools Festival, which is set to be held from 3 to 5 September at the Durban Playhouse.

The rapidly growing festival is in its fifth consecutive season and is set to further enhance their performing skills while also empowering them to fully understand English literature from an early age.

The Shakespeare Schools Festival South Africa was initiated and coordinated by Educape, with the aim of providing an equal opportunity where there are no boundaries for participation and is a opportunity for youth seeking opportunities to explore their potential in a fun and developmental way. The festival is in its fifth consecutive season and has reached over 1000 high school learners and educators in the Western Cape, Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal Provinces.

Cast workshops were recently held where participating schools and their teachers come in for a workshop that is aimed at allowing participants to meet each other, engage in general drama activities and some specific exercises that are examples of rehearsal moments that they can use at their own spaces. These workshops are highly inspiring for all as they will be leading up to the actual festival. It gives learners an opportunity to create and present an original drama on a professional stage while also learning the discipline to being a performer.
