Calendar raises funds for antelope
Proceeds from the sale of CROW's 2016 wildlife calendar will fund the building of a baby antelope enclosure.
CROW is encouraging the community to order one of its 2016 Contrasts of Africa wildlife calendars, which will help CROW to build a baby antelope enclosure at their premises in Yellowwood Park.
CROW rescues, rehabilitates and releases over 50 injured and orphaned antelope every year. The vast majority of these animals are left orphaned as a result of poaching and illegal dog hunting. The most common species that CROW works with are grey, red and blue Duikers, reedbuck, steenbok and bushbuck.
“Both the blue duiker and reedbuck are currently classified as threatened species due to their rapidly decreasing numbers in the wild,” said Claire Hodgkinson, director of CROW.
All the antelope patients that are rescued by CROW are provided with life-saving care and treatment at its Durban-based centre before they are released back into the wild. Eliah, the blue duiker, was rescued by CROW when he was just 10 days old. He was found abandoned on the side of road in the Amanzimtoti area and had a minor injury above his right eye which, following medical treatment at CROW, has since healed. Since his admission to CROW in May this year, Eliah has been under the care of CROW Clinic Nurse, Kelly Wilyman. Eliah will be released at a safe location later this year.
The proceeds raised from the sale of the 2016 calendar will help house the growing number of injured and orphaned baby antelope patients that are being admitted to CROW every year. The calendar campaign is organised and run by the voluntary organisation Under an African Sky, a Compass Medical Waste Services initiative, and over the years the campaign has raised R750 000 for CROW.
