Elderly woman dies in freak accident

AN elderly woman tragically died in a freak incident on the M4 Durban Bound near Congella this afternoon.

According to Rescue Care’s operations director, Garrith Jamieson, paramedics responded to a collision involving a bakkie and taxi and were shocked by what they found when they arrived at the scene. “A bakkie and a taxi were travelling in the same direction towards Durban when the bakkie’s side shaft came off. The tyre and shaft then bounced on the freeway before bouncing off the centre median and colliding with the taxi on its side. Unfortunately, an elderly woman sitting next to that window, sustained fatal injuries and there was nothing paramedics could do for her,” Jamieson explained.

Three other passengers sustained minor injuries and were stabilised at the scene before they were taken to hospital.

Jamieson said it was unclear how the side shaft came off the vehicle, however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.
