Noisy students a nightmare for neighbours
Residents in Cleveland Place, Berea, are having sleepless nights due to the noise from a neighbouring block.
NOISY students living in a block of flats in Cleveland Place, Berea, have become a nightmare for neighbours living in close poximity.
According to a resident, the building was renovated and subdivided in 2013, and students were moved in. Since then, neighbours have been subjected to noise that includes shouting and loud music.
“We were told students wouldn't be moved into the block, but they were, and it's been a nightmare ever since! We have met with the building manager, who said they weren't going to take the students in initially, but felt sorry for them. We are subjected to loud music and shouting from the afternoon until the early hour. I battle to sleep at night. I have resorted to wearing ear plugs,” he said.
He said there were people living in his block who had small children, and another whose daughter was writing matric, and had to put up with the nightly noise disturbances.
“I have contacted the ward councillor and Metro Police, and have been in constant contact with the area commander regarding this issue. As far as I can tell, Metro are not doing anything. This is an ongoing problem, and I can't take it anymore. If the students were quiet, I wouldn't have any problem with them living here, but this is terrible,” he said.
In response to queries from Berea Mail, the area commander, Ashley Dove, said he had tasked a member to deal with the issue.
EThekwini Municipality head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa, said: “The City is investigating the matter and an official from the relevant unit has been sent to the property to speak to the property owner.”
