Academic and sports achievers at Glenwood

Glenwood High's top academic and sports achievers were recognised at the school's annual prize giving.

THE annual Glenwood High School senior speech and prize giving ceremony took place on Thursday, 15 October.

Awards were presented to top academics and the guest speaker for the evening was historian, Mr Ken Gillings.

The Dux of the school was Ewan Slabber, Dux Proxime Accessit was Connor Gons and third in Grade 12 was Aidan Pellow-Jarman.

The current head prefect, Nama Xaba announced Jordan Grobbelaar as the head prefect for 2016.

Bursaries were awarded at the ceremony, including the Silent Devotion Scholarship, which went to Jacob Rishworth, Varsity College Bursary (Glenwood Old Boys’ Club Award), which went to Linda Sibiya and the Max Sandler Memorial Goodfellowship Bursary which was awarded to Liam Flanagan.

Special awards, including the Leadership Excellence (Grant Robertson Award) were awarded to Kuyenzeka Xaba, The Jes Foord Trophy for Community Service went to Sleka Manthata and Daniel Verfaillie, the Perseverance Award (Warren Clewlow Award) went to Tyrone Atherton, the Service Award (Simon McChesney Memorial) went to Justin Myers, the Boarder Head Prefect award (Don Chase Memorial Award) went to Kuyenzeka Xaba, RCL Chairman award (The TM Kershaw Trophy) went to Seleka Manthata, the Head Prefect award (Owen Ritson Memorial Prize) went to Kuyenzeka Xaba and the Head Prefects Leadership Award went to Liam Wilson.

Games Caps were also awarded. The SA U19 cricket cap went to Nduduzo Mfoza and Okuhle Cele, the SA U19 squash cap went to Michael Howard, the SA U19 swimming cap went to Kevin Bargate and Keown Delomoney and the SA U18 rugby 7s cap went to Donovan du Randt (Junior Commonwealth Games), who was also awarded as The Sportsman of the Year (The Derek La Marque Trophy) at the annual sports’ banquet on Friday 23 October, where the guest speaker for the evening was Adrian Hansen, top KZN and SA squash player and Mr Price Sport Hero.

Donovan represented South Africa at the Commonwealth Youth Games, winning a gold medal for sevens rugby.
