THE Glenwood residents who were victims of a negligent driver who crashed a Jeep into their complex, smashing two parked vehicles and two brick walls on the night of 24 October are no closer to seeing justice served.
Nosipho Bophela, chairperson of Elm Gardens Body Corporate said despite a meeting with the Umbilo Police Station Commander on Thursday, they are still waiting to hear that the incident is to be investigated.
“We were so hopeful last week because Col Mkhize was very sympathetic after hearing about the incident and apologised for how the case had been handled. He also said Umbilo police were taking the case seriously and would do their best to get to the bottom and resolve this case.”
Bophela said the station commander assured the residents, the two officers who were on scene the night of the crash and did not report the incident would be dealt with internally. “After chatting for a while and debating what charge should be investigated, we were happy that finally a Reckless and Negligent investigation with an assigned detective would investigate the crash and the driver who disappeared,” she explained.
The residents left the meeting with restored hope and had to put renovating their walls on hold for the day while two officers arrived to investigate the scene (three weeks after the incident). They were told they would get an sms with the case number and a detective would contact them by the end of the day.
On Tuesday however, the residents had still not received the sms confirming the case was opened or being investigated.
