School ‘goes green’

Pupils at Golden Gateway School in Cato Manor are being educated in permaculture.

THE Golden Gateway School in Cato Manor has 'gone green' thanks to a kind donation by a Shallcross medical doctor, of a new greenhouse.

School HOD, Joe Rooplal, said he was very interested in growing vegetables and attended a permaculture course so he could encourage interest in permaculture at the school.

“I fell ill, and my doctor, Dr RB Bharath, asked what I needed at the school. I said a greenhouse was one of my wishes. Thanks to him, we now have a greenhouse and are harvesting good crops of vegetables,” he said.

The school also has a tyre garden, which is very successful, and management and staff of NPC recently donated a shade cloth roof for the garden, to stop monkeys from stealing the crops.

“The vision of the school is to involve the staff and pupils in the permaculture programme and tech them skills and provide them with seedlings to take home to plant. The vegetables we harvest are sold to raise funds,” said Mr Rooplal.

The school appeals to the community for a donation of a sprinkler system for the greenhouse. If anyone can help, contact Mr Rooplal on 084 580 2167.
