THE South African Writers’ Circle will meet on Saturday, 16 January at the Westville Library (Room G4) at 11am.

David Canning, past editor of the Natal Mercury will be the guest speaker. A workshop will follow where those attending will have an opportunity to apply their writing skills – this is voluntary. Interested persons are also invited to take a piece of writing to read out at a get-together after the conclusion of the meeting. Visitors are welcome. Take a plate of eats. THE Morning Trade will be at The Plant – 5 Station Drive, Station Drive Precinct, Durban, on 17 January.

THE Durban Seniors Social Club invites you to its monthly meeting on the third Wednesday, 20 January, at Berea Congregational Church Hall, entrance in Pardy Gardens Road, off Musgrave Road, Durban. This will be a musical morning with entertainment by the Vermaak Family, a treat not to be missed. All ladies and gents welcome. DURBAN authors Barry Smith and Andrew Blaine will launch their new book entitled the Next Step – Planning The Road to Retirement, at the Dulcé Café in Hillcrest on Wednesday, 20 January at 10am. The book, which raises important non-financial issues ahead of retirement, provides planning advice and techniques. It will be sold at a discount. Entrance is free but booking essential. THE KwaZulu-Natal Branch of the South African Military History Society will meet on Thursday 21 January at 7pm for 7.30pm at the Murray Lecture Theatre, Department of Civil Engineering, University of KwaZulu-Natal Howard College Campus.

The speakers will be a team from Glenwood High School on Durban / Natal Sportsmen in World War 1 and Adrian Nisbett on The von Blücher Brothers and the Invasion of Crete.
