Unlicenced guns recovered

KZN police have recovered 41 unlicensed firearms in the province.

SAPS had a reason to celebrate when 41 unlicensed firearms were recovered in one week-long operation.

The operation started on 10 January and ran until 17 January throughout the province. A total of 40 suspects were arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. More than 660 different types of ammunition were also recovered during the operation.

The confiscated firearms comprise of 32 pistols, three home-made firearms, a pallet gun, three shotguns and two rifles.

The suspects appeared in various magistrates’ courts across the province and all the recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to check if they were used in any other crime in the country.

“We are pleased with the recent recoveries of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The members will continue to work tirelessly and make our province free from unlicensed firearms. I also want to remind the lawful owners of legal firearms that they must please make sure that they renew their firearm licenses at their nearest police station. They must take extra precautions to safeguard their firearms and always lock them in a safe if they are not in their physical possession,” said Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
