A THIEF got more than he bargained for when he approached a resident and a caretaker at a building in Cato Road.
According to resident, Lucille Bellin, the man went to the block of flats in the first week of January, dressed in a DSW orange overall, claiming DSW had over-delivered refuse bags and he was taking them back.
“Silly me, I gave him some bags and I obviously wasn't the only one who fell for his story!” she said.
Lucille said she mentioned this to the caretaker, Lucky Chiliza, last Wednesday, who told her he had seen the man selling the bags at the market.
“At 11.40am last Wednesday, the bell rang and he was back again! I called Lucky and he identified the man. He asked him to go to the storeroom with him to get bags, but he wouldn't go because he knew he had been caught out!” she said.
Lucky held the man outside and Lucille called the police.
“I got back to find Lucky giving the man a huge lecture! He stood over him and watched him until the police came. The man was petrified! The police response was very good and he was apparently given a warning that if it happens again, he will be charged. Lucky warned him, so he won't be back again!” said Lucille.
She said Lucky's father had been caretaker at the building for more than 40 years, and Lucky had grown up at the building.
“He's got a good network around the road and knows all the guys who talk to each other about what's going on in the area. It's great for security,” she said.
