A DISCIPLINED approach to training for big athletics or sporting events is always a good idea, and according to a local security company, in the same way, attention should always be paid to your safety while out on the road.
Thousands of South Africans are currently finalising their preparations for the annual Argus Cycle Tour by going on exercise rides, and ADT Security has urged them to not neglect their personal safety measures while training.
“A good place to start is to make sure someone knows the route you are training on and when you are expected to return. This will help them raise the alarm immediately in case something goes wrong,” said ADT Security’s general manager (coastal region), Adrian Good.
He said secondly, cyclists must make sure they wear bright reflective clothing that is visible to other road users, and that a reflective strip on your shoes will not be enough.
He said cycling on your own is also not recommended, and a better option is to join a group of fellow cyclists especially if you are tackling a longer training ride. Not only is there safety in numbers, but you can also support each other when you get tired.
Good offers advice for anyone taking part in any type of outdoors and athletic training. He said people should make sure their cellphone is properly charged so they are able to call for help in case of an emergency. He also said people should leave the headphones at home, as it is better to remain aware of your surroundings at all times so that you can hear any oncoming vehicles or other potential risks to your safety.
“Don’t use the same training route every day. Varying the route makes it difficult for any would-be criminal to anticipate your movements, while the change in scenery can also make the physical exertion more bearable for you. Take along enough money to be able to catch a bus or a taxi or even make a phone call from a payphone, if need be,” he said.Good said if you have an alarm system at home, remember to activate it before leaving for a training ride, and lock all the doors and gates.”Cycling groups such as the Pedal Power Association have put together very important safe cycling tips. Take a look at their website www.pedalpower.org.za for advice,” said Good.
