
Nine arrested in roadblock
BEREA police arrested nine people for driving under the influence of alcohol in a late night roadblock operation on Florida Road on Friday night. Lieutenant PN Naidoo, communications officer at Berea SAPS said, “Once again a word of warning goes out to the public, if you are going out partying use a cab service or engage the services of a sober driver, do not take a chance and drive, you will be arrested if caught.”
Thief caught red handed
A 22-year-old suspect was arrested for house-breaking after he was seen running off with a Morningside man’s stolen items. According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, on Friday night about 10.30pm, on Avondale Road, a complainant who was alone at home heard a noise in the next bedroom and went to check. “The man found the place ransacked and the window wide open. He saw a young man carrying his son’s bag running away from his home, so he followed the suspect to see where he was going. Berea police were patrolling along the road and the man stopped them and explained what had happened. The officers chased and arrested the suspect and recovered the bag, inside which they found an iPhone and a small safe that belonged to the complainant’s son. The suspect was arrested and detained at Berea SAPS,” added Naidoo.
Bicycle recovered
A R4000 bicycle was stolen and recovered after a garage was broken into on Hollander Crescent on Sunday morning.Lieutenant PN Naidoo said the security company armed response monitoring the area was quick to respond and arrested the suspect and recovered the bicycle. “When the complainant was informed he was unaware that the garage had been broken into and only confirmedthe incident after checking his garage. Partnership policing is very effective and the SAPS welcomes all assistance from the public as well as our fellow security companies in our fight against crime. A very big thank you to the company that monitors the street,” he added.
Good arrests
A suspicious man was searched and arrested for possession of cocaine in the early hours of Thursday morning on Ninth Avenue. Another suspicious man was found loitering near a pharmacy on Musgrave Road shortly after. The man was stopped and searched by Sgt Carl Denis and Captain Kevin Stephen and found in possession of dishes and crockery suspected to be stolen.
Constable Byron Erasmus, arrested a Burundian national at about 2am on Friday morning near St Thomas and Currie Road, for breaking into a vehicle.
