Skeletal remains found on Durban beach

An inquest docket has been opened at Durban Central SAPS for investigation.

SKELETAL remains were found buried on the beach near Suncoast on Wednesday.

According to reports, a homeless man who had been chasing a chicken saw a bone sticking out of a sand dune.

He reportedly pulled the bone out and then showed it to security guards at the beach.

Provincial SAPS spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane said the police were called out to the scene.

Zwane said the man found a skull partially buried in the dunes and police also found skeletal remains of a spinal column and a pelvis buried in the dunes.

The Police Search and Rescue Unit was called in to search the dunes with a sniffer dog.

Police stated religious ceremonies were held at the beachfront where chickens and goats are sacrificed. They also said vagrants frequent the dunes for shelter.
