New bylaw targets recycling activities

A new by-law will enable DSW and Metro Police to fine the companies collecting the cardboard from unauthorised collection points.

DURBAN Solid Waste is at present powerless to stop the activities of informal cardboard collectors and recycle centres but a new by-law is set to give DSW and Metro Police the authority to fine companies collecting cardboard from unauthorised collection points.

According to councillor Chris Pappas collectors leave a mess and damage infrastructure, in particular manholes. “The process is 95 per cent complete according to the DSW senior manager and is currently with the chief prosecutor,” said Pappas.

Pappas said SAPS had agreed, at a recent Sydenham GOCOC meeting (stakeholders meeting), to assist in policing the cardboard collector issue.

“I have requested a letter from DSW which will allow SAPS to take action. I am waiting for that letter and a response from DSW,” said Pappas.
