Grandfather sentenced to life imprisonment for rape

The man was convicted after pleading guilty to raping his six-year-old granddaughter.

The Durban Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 50-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping his granddaughter. He was convicted after pleading guilty to rape on 20 December 2018.

According to SAPS spokesman Col  Thulani Zwane on 23 February 2018 at 17:45, the victim (6) was in the house in Wentworth when she was approached by her grandfather. She was repeatedly raped by the accused. Her stepfather, who was sleeping in another room, heard the noise and became suspicious. He went out to investigate and saw the accused raping the victim. The accused ran away after he realised he had been seen.

Community members were mobilised and the police were also notified. They searched for the accused in the area and he was later arrested on the same day. He was charged for rape and taken to court where he appeared several times until he was sentenced.
