Book fair offers entertaining programme

The fair is run on the first Sunday of every month at Mitchell Park.

THERE will be lots to entertain visitors at this Sunday’s Durban Book Fair at Mitchell Park, which runs from 10am to 3pm.

The fair takes place on the first Sunday of every month and aims to build a reading culture in Durban and to give local writers a platform to market their books.

Visitors to the fair can enjoy a poetry recital by deaf poet Zohra Moosa at 10am, which will be interpreted by Dr Anusuya Ram, followed by Lookman Lanoen, author of Kwerekwere Handbook and the Kwerekwere Saga, in conversation with S’bo Vilakazi from 11am.

At noon, Dr Gaster Sharpley, author of 10 books will share his journey in politics, business and public service, and the launch of Durban journalist, columnist and retired teacher, Usha Naidu’s first book, entitled Behind the Scenes, Insights into the Journey of Parenting, will be at 1pm.

Naidu’s book covers the many columns she wrote on the topic for a local daily newspaper and which garnered a huge following due to its hard hitting and thought-provoking content. These columns have now been compiled into the book which is peppered with stories of her own difficult childhood and upbringing in a time when children were “seen and not heard”.

You can also hear Wandile Ngcaweni, editor of We are no Longer at Ease – The Struggle for #FeesMustFall, in conversation with Anele Madonsela at 2pm, and end off the day with a reading by Gari M Joubert from his books Uptown Saturday Night Downtown Sunday Morning and Book from the Black Box at 3pm.

Booksellers, writers and publishers are invited to set up a stall to market their books at no cost. Contact Anivesh on 083 778 1991.
