A poetry project has been launched by the organisers of the monthly Durban Book Fair.
A UNIQUE “flash mob” poetry project has been launched by the organisers of the monthly Durban Book Fair.
Themed These Songs of Freedom, the project is designed to mark the nationwide celebration of 25 years of democracy in April.
Among those spearheading the initiative is local bibliophile, Kiru Naidoo. “We want poems that express the pain, joy, lament and hope of the journey to South African freedom,” said Naidoo.
The “flash mob” idea is to get ordinary people thinking and writing quickly. “We want to capture the rawness of heart, soul, spirit and thought that disregards the ordinary rules of writing.”

The project is open from 25 to 31 March. Entries must be less than 500 words, in any world language and be signed off as the author’s original work together with a one sentence biography. The editors will exercise their discretion in the selection to be published in April.
The launch is anticipated at the First Sunday’s #DurbanBookFair on 7 April at Mitchell Park. Naidoo added that by submitting an entry, authors agree to publication and that no prizes or inducements are offered. Entries may be emailed to ripple-effect@mweb.co.za before midnight on 31 March or sent by WhatsApp to 082 940 8163.
