Youth excel at performing arts competition
Contestants from across KZN competed at the recent South African Championship of Performing Arts showcase.
TWENTY-SEVEN contestants from across KZN competed at the recent South African Championship of Performing Arts (SACOPA), at the Rustenburg Civic Centre in the North West province.
Provincial teams competed in a number of performing arts disciplines, namely vocal, dance, acting, modelling and variety arts, for a chance to be selected for the South African team to represent the country at the World Championships in Los Angeles, at an event dubbed the Olympics of Performing Arts.
KZN achieved 53 gold medals (first place in category), 62 silver medals and 24 bronze medals, as well as producing category award winners in the following disciplines – Dance Female (aged 13-15) – Grace McIlroy, Acting Male (aged 16-17) – Cameron Moodie, Modelling Female (aged 16-17) – Chane Badenhorst and Dance Male (aged 16-17) – Cameron Moodie.
In addition, Cameron won the overall award for dance for achieving the highest individual score in this category. The teacher’s award was presented to KZN choreographer and dance teacher, Donna da Costa, and team KZN were the proud recipients of the Spirit Award. In total, 24 members of the KZN team qualified for the national squad.
