SAPS crackdown nets 709 arrests

A total of 709 suspects were arrested by KZN police in operations from 16 to 22 July.

MORE than 700 wanted suspects were arrested by KZN police during a week-long intensive operations across the province.

From 16 to 22 July, police carried out roadblocks, suspect raids, stop and search operations, inspections on liquor outlets, cordon and search operations and intensive patrols in various parts of the province, and arrested 709 suspects for crimes that included murder, robberies, carjacking, rape, drunken driving and assault.

Of the suspects arrested, 147 were arrested for drug-related crimes while 81 were arrested for drunken driving. A total of 74 were arrested for assault, 23 for robberies,13 for murder, nine for housebreaking, and 11 for rape. Others were arrested for attempted murder, carjacking, public violence, fraud, domestic violence, and dealing in liquor without a license.

Drugs including dagga, heroin, mandrax and cocaine were seized during the operations. A large quantity of alcohol, clothing, suspected stolen vehicles, firearms, tools and knives were also seized. All arrested suspects appeared in various courts in the province while others were issued with summons to pay fines.
