Gumede and the 15 co-accused face fraud, money laundering and corruption charges related to a R208m Durban Solid Waste tender.

On Wednesday, the state revealed that it had gathered further damning information against the accused after documents were discovered in the home of city official Sandile Ngcobo during raids by the Asset Forfeiture Unit.  Ngcobo, deputy head of the city’s supply chain management, is also an accused in the matter.

The documents revealed that a further R181m was paid to some of the accused between July 2018 and June 2019.  The state asked for six months in which to comlete its investigation in preparation for trial. Magistrate Dawn Somaroo adjourned the matter to 16 April.

Outside court, surrounded by her supporters, who gathered to hold a night vigil on Tuesday to pray for her, Gumede claimed the case against her was politically motivated.
