DURBAN Roller Derby players are anxiously waiting for lockdown regulations to be lifted so they can get back to practice.

Some of the players, who recenlty took part in an international African Good Time tournament which saw an epic continental battle between teams from north and south Africa on 15 March, have been on self-quarrantine since returning home from their second place win.

Durban Roller Derby halted practice on Tuesday 17 March 2020 and are anxious to get back so that they can continue fundraising for their travel team. As a non-profit organisation, the team depends solely on fundraising to finance its travel, bout hosting and bootcamps.

We are currently running a raffle, 2 nights accommodation at the Amphitheatre Backpackers worth over R2000, but we have limited resources to sell tickets due to the pandemic. We plan to move to online facebook and instagram platforms to carry us through, said vice chair, Vicky aka HellVixen.

Entries for the raffle close on 30 April at noon and the winner will be announced at 6pm on the group’s social media platforms. Roller derby is the fastest-growing women’s sport in the world, with an estimated 2 000 leagues across 53 countries.

On local shores, four roller derby leagues exist in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town. These teams compete in a national tournament annually and top players from all four leagues have been sent to represent their country at the international Roller Derby World Cup, held every three to four years.
