Murder accused sentenced to 20 years behind bars

The accused was sentenced following the murder of a man and the attempted murder of two others in January 2018.

SINOTHANDO Xabendlini, (40), appeared in the Durban High Court last week where he was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Capt Muzi Maphumulo from Durban Central SAPS said this comes after the murder of a man on 20 January 2018.

“The deceased was drinking with Xabendlini and other people in Julius Nyerere Avenue in Durban when he got into a fight with Xabendlini who left after the quarrel. He allegedly returned an hour later with a firearm (pistol) and shot the victim in the chest. He also shot a second person in the right thigh when he tried to intervene. The victim succumbed to his injuries on the scene and Xabendlini fled,” he said.

Maphumulo said the accused attempted to kill a bus driver four days later.

“He quarrelled with a bus driver at the bus terminal in Durban. He drew a firearm and shot at him. He was attacked by other drivers who came to the rescue and was arrested on the same day by the Durban Central Police,” he said.

A case of murder and attempted murder was investigated by Durban Central detectives. Xabendlini was denied bail at his first court appearance in 2018.

“The intensive investigations led to the conviction and sentencing of the accused who was sentenced to 20 years behind bars,” said Maphumulo.
