Three men arrested while attempting to rob an Umbilo liquor outlet

The suspects will appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 23 March on charges of attempted robbery, illegal possession of firearms, illegal possession of ammunition as well as pointing of a firearm.

THE quick response by Umbilo SAPS resulted in the arrest of three armed robbers on Thursday, 18 March.

According to Col Thembeka Mbele from provincial SAPS, it is alleged that on Thursday night at 7.50pm, employees were locking the business premises on Umbilo Road when they were held up by three armed suspects.

“While they were robbing the employees, Umbilo police officers swiftly responded to the scene. Three suspects were arrested at the scene. One of the suspects pointed a firearm at the police officers and was shot in the arm. He was treated at the scene and was placed under arrest. Two of the suspects were found in possession of illegal firearms with 22 rounds of ammunition,” she said.

Mbele said the preliminary investigation conducted at the scene revealed that the recovered firearms were stolen in Greenwood Park and Durban Central. The suspects will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 23 March on charges of attempted robbery, illegal possession of firearms, illegal possession of ammunition as well as pointing of a firearm.

Acting provincial commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Thulani Gonya, praised the Umbilo SAPS for a speedy response and the swift arrest of the robbers.
