Glenwood school embarks on glass recycling project

The school received its glass recycling bank last week and is now on a mission to collect the highest tonnage of glass jars and/or bottles.

OPEN Air School has joined the fight to reduce waste by launching an exciting fundraiser to help save the planet.

This year, the school, which also celebrates its 100th anniversary, is participating in the Glass Recycling Fundraising Initiative hosted by The Glass Recycling Company.

The school received its glass recycling bank last week and is now on a mission to collect the highest tonnage of glass jars and/or bottles.

The competition is set to run from 1 February 2021 to 31 October 2021. The glass recycling jar is located at the Frere Crescent entrance (next to the paper recycling bin) and residents are encouraged to help the school reach the highest tonnage of glass as there tonnes of prizes to be won or a cash reward of R74 000.

Speaking about the school’s 100 year celebrations, Open Air School’s chief education therapist Zahira Abdulla said their birthday plans were currently on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This, however, has not stopped the learners and educators at the school from spearheading various fundraising initiatives which include glass and paper recycling.

“In the 100 years of the school’s existence we have have eight school principals, our current principal is Mr Noel Moodley who is a great leader and a visionary. This school caters for learners with various disabilities from pre-primary to Grade 12. We follow a mainstream curriculum and assist our learners in using their various tools of learning in the classrooms,” said Abdulla.
