Copper thieves target Glenwood school
Claude Pillai from Open Air School talks about the devastating effects of the theft.
THE ongoing trespassing and copper theft at Open Air School in Glenwood is affecting the non-profit organisation’s coffers.
Educator, Foundation Phase Departmental Head and one of the staff involved with school fundraising at Open Air, Claude Pillai, said their 100th anniversary celebrations have been marred by the ongoing theft.
“Unfortunately, we have been targeted for our copper piping. This has been happening for a few months and it has caused devastating effects on our funds and learners. Each time we have to repair the pipe, the water has to be switched off. Learners also had to be sent home as they were unable to use the toilets,” said Pillai.
She said the cost of pipes stolen to date amounts to R60 000.

“We were fortunate to have one of our parents and community members offer to assist with the plumbing after the last incident,” said Pillai.
“The theft and the amount of money being poured into upgrading and maintaining the school is having a negative effect on our community, but the principal and staff needs to be applauded for their amazing loyalty to their school,” said Pillai.
