Morningside resident launches successful sanitary pad drive

Noxolo Ngcepe to initiate the #SaniDrive21 campaign on social media, encouraging people to donate R20 towards the cause.

ACCESS to sanitary pads continues to be a growing concern for young South African women.

This issue prompted Morningside resident, Noxolo Ngcepe to initiate the #SaniDrive21 campaign on social media, encouraging people to donate R20 towards the cause.

The success of the campaign led to Ngcepe donating her first batch of sanitary pads to Greyville Primary School recently.

Speaking about the campaign, Ngcepe said, “Towards the end of March, I started a campaign on WhatsApp where I asked my friends and everyone on my contact list to donate any amount from R20 onwards towards the sanitary pads drive. I then extended the same campaign on Instagram and Facebook. My aim was to get at least R1000 to buy the pads for young girls. To my surprise, I got the R1000 within eight days,” said Ngceqe.

She said the overwhelming response she received inspired her to continue the project through April.

“That is when I added more schools to the list of recipients which included Greyville Primary school and Amandlakayise Primary School. I managed to get over 500 packs of pads, thanks to everyone’s donation,” said Ngceqe. To support the campaign contact Noxolo on 082 518 9955.

“At Greyville, I was welcomed by the staff and Grade seven learners. The learners gathered in the hall for a little talk about periods and then the school received about 90 packs of pads to also keep in their office for emergencies. My target is to help children from Grade five, six and seven, at each school, who might be in need of pads,” said Ngceqe.
