Durban muso to release new single
The song encourages listeners to embrace change, a challenge, singer Haylea Heyns has also set for herself in the new year.
DURBAN’S songbird, Haylea Heyns, is set to release her new single, Cold Water, in February this year.
She said the song is a metaphor for embracing change.
“It is an up-tempo pop song, produced by local Durban producer, Markus Els. This is my debut collaboration with this producer, but I am really excited about the work we’ve created together and can’t wait for people to hear it,” she said.
Heyns said the song speaks to the kind of person who always plays it safe and ‘swims back to the shallow end’ when the boundaries of their comfort zone are challenged.

“Lately, I have been challenging myself to do things I would usually be afraid of and to step out of my comfort zone and into the deep end. Every time I have taken a step out of my safe space, it has been incredibly scary, but I have grown as a result. I wanted to encourage other people to dare to do the same. It’s never pleasant diving into cold water, but the feeling afterward is exhilarating,” she said.
When asked about her New Year’s goals, Heyns said it was to find balance and to care less about what people think.
“There are a few things I would like to do more of. I want to write and record more music and learn a new skill. On New Year’s Eve, I kick-started this last resolution by taking my first surfing lesson. I surprised myself by being able to stand up on the board, and this taught me that you should never be afraid to try something new, because you may just end up enjoying it,” she said.

Heyns also shared how she sticks to her resolutions.
“In the past, I have written a long list of things I wanted to change or achieve, and I just ended up disappointing myself. A New Year’s resolution shouldn’t be a complete physical or emotional transformation. I don’t believe you should put that much pressure on yourself. Pick two or three things, at most, that you would like to do or change in 2022, and then write them down. Ask yourself if these things are realistic, achievable, and kind to your body, mind, and soul. If they are, great. If they’re not, scratch them out and pick something else,” she said.
