THE South African Defence Force (SANDF) evicted several people from a Musgrave military house on 245 Vause Road on Wednesday, February 9.

SANDF spokesperson, Brigadier General Andries Mahapa said SANDF’s Army Support Base KwaZulu Natal (ASB KZN) was granted a court order to conduct the eviction.

According to Mahapa, they arrived on the scene just after 16:00 to find about six people, including foreign nationals illegally squatting in the military house.

“An eviction order was granted by the local court against a foreign woman (Nigerian) who was married to an SANDF official who has since retired from service, divorced the woman and left the property which was allocated to him as per the SANDF housing scheme for married military couples,” he said.

Mahapa said that while the divorce was underway, the woman invited her family from Nigeria to stay with her. 

“A Nigerian man and woman were found along with the woman and her two daughters aged 20 and 24. They each produced their SA Identification cards,” said Mahapa.

Mahapa said Military Police enlisted the assistance of local SAPS, K9 Unit and a local security company to conduct a search of the property for any illicit goods and or criminal activities that may have been conducted at the property.

“On arrival at the house, it was discovered that there was a high number of new and used electronic equipment and bicycles that the occupants failed to account for. These have been confiscated from the occupants until such time they can account for the electronic equipment found at the house,” said Mahapa.

The illegal occupants of the house have since been evicted and the house secured.

“The matter is under investigation by the relevant military and law enforcement officials to determine certain aspects connected with the matter,” concluded Mahapa.
