Durban Girls' learner gets sporting colours for drum majorettes as she excels in Croatia

Ntandokazi said, “I started drum majorettes in 2017 when I was in Grade Four. I joined the Durban Junior Majorettes because I didn’t know much about the sport, but I was intrigued to learn more about it and eventually master the skill of how to be a drummie. I then received my Junior Colours when I was in Grade Six, but due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, I could no longer participate. When I returned [to the sport], I was already in Grade 10, and I soon received my KwaZulu-Natal Colours. My school later placed first in South Africa for the Majorettes National 2023 held in Durban.”

Ntandokazi received the colours awarded to sportsmen and women by the National Federation (NF), just in time for her to meet up with the Springboks. According to the federation, this is ‘the highest award that an athlete or official can earn in recognition of their achievements’.

Sporting Colours, more often known merely as Colours are awarded to members of the National Federation (NF) who have excelled in a sport.

Clearly excelling in the sport, Ntandokazi went on to receive her Protea Colours, which are equivalent to those worn by the Springboks, Banyana Banyana and other national teams.

Ntandokazi has recently represented South Africa in Croatia, where she came first place in Junior and Senior Small Drills and Junior Trios. Upon her return, she had the privilege to escort the Springboks on their Victory Tour around Durban.

“I was so happy to see the Springboks defend our trophy and winning the Rugby World Cup for the second time in a row. It made me so proud and grateful to know that I had the same badge and colours as them, and it made me only want to work even harder to accomplish more on my journey.”

Ntandokazi had an all-access card during the Springboks tour and was able to meet the players and take pictures with them.
