Lecturer flies country flag high on global stage

A University of KwaZulu-Natal lecturer presented his research at the 15th Consortium of Universities for Global Health conference in Los Angeles, United States.

A UNIVERSITY of KwaZulu-Natal lecturer made South Africa proud as he presented his research on the global stage. Occupational therapy lecturer Luther Monareng presented his provisional PhD research findings in a poster titled ‘Insights of Service Providers and End Users on Employment Evidence-Based Frameworks for Persons with Disability’.

Monareng delivered the presentation at the 15th Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) conference in Los Angeles, United States. Under the theme, ‘Global Health without Borders: Acting for Impact’, the conference attracted more than 230 speakers and a diverse audience of 1 400 from about 60 countries.

The lecturer highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing global health challenges, citing workshops such as the SDG-360 – Thinking as Catalysts for Collective Action. He stressed the need for a concerted effort to move beyond isolated research endeavours towards impactful and measurable outcomes.

Furthermore, Monareng advocated for greater inclusivity in global health discussions, calling for the active involvement of low to middle-income countries (LMCs) in shaping policy and addressing sensitive political issues. He proposed the idea of hosting future CUGH congresses in LMC countries to promote broader participation and facilitate meaningful dialogue on critical health issues.
