UKZN receives 290 000 applications for 8600 spaces

Out of over 290 600 applications for first year places received by the University of KwaZulu-Natal, approximately 8600 will be joining the institution for the 2025 academic year.

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) says they will not be accepting on campus walk-ins or undertaking ‘change of mind’ applications as they continue to wade through just over 290 600 individual applications for approximately 8600 first-year places available in 2025.

“In keeping with previous years, the university is, once again, offering all registration processes strictly online,” said UKZN spokesperson Norma Zondo. “All registration processes, including the so-called ‘change of mind’ process, are only available online and are to be done off-campus. No on-campus and in-person service will be offered. Thus, no unregistered person will be allowed onto campuses. The university will not be accepting any ‘walk-ins’.”

This warning comes as the Class of 2024 awaits their National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination results next week and the final outcome of their applications to various higher education institutions around the country. “Last year the university received over 290 600 individual applications for approximately 8600 first-year places available in 2025. Numerous provisional offers were issued last year to some of the applicants. These will be confirmed in the form of firm offers, which will be issued in batches immediately after the public release of the 2024 official NSC (Matric) results, scheduled for January 13, provided the conditions of the provisional offers are met,” said Zondo.

All first-entry undergraduates who accept an offer will be provided with data and all relevant information to assist them in registering from their remote locations. Data will also be allocated to returning students who were registered for the 2024 academic year and do not have a Degree Complete (DC) status.

“The University management will not issue any invitation to or invite prospective applicants or applicants to visit any of our campuses to apply or submit an application, to undertake a change of mind, to register, or to get a response to a query. The university wishes to caution prospective students not to fall for scams, including those promising placements at UKZN, in exchange for a fee. Places at UKZN are not for sale. We urge the public to avoid falling victim to these scams and to report any incidents to the SAPS,” said Zondo.

Reports can be made anonymously at any time, through the following official channels: toll-free number (0800 203 285), via email at ukzn@tip-offs.com, or through the website https://www.tip-offs.com. First-semester lectures are scheduled to commence on February 10.
