Open Air School produces top achievers

Three Open Air School matriculants were positioned first, second and third in KwaZulu-Natal under special schools for the 2024 National Senior Certificate examinations. The school achieved a 100% pass rate.

BEING differently abled has not stopped the learners of Open Air School measuring up against their peers as they rose above their challenges to achieve some of the best results in the 2024 National Senior Certificate examinations, contributing to KwaZulu-Natal’s 89.5% and 84 470 bachelor passes.

Open Air School in Glenwood, Berea, had some of the best results in the province with three of their matriculants claiming positions one, two and three in KZN, under the special schools category. The school also achieved a 100% pass rate. The top achiever was Lwazi Makhathini who took first place in the province after obtaining seven distinctions and one B symbol. The number two spot went to Ziyaad Arumugam while Lindokuhle Gwala rounded up the top three after finishing in third position in KZN.

Makhathini, who got a pass mark of 91%, said he was humbled to be recognised among the top achievers in the province after receiving his award from the Premier of KZN, Thamsanqa Ntuli, the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, and the MEC for Education, Sipho Hlomuka. The 18-year-old Open Air Dux for 2024 sat exams in English, IsiZulu, pure mathematics, accounting, business studies, religious studies, drama, and life orientation.

“It is truly humbling to be among my peers and to be recognised in the province,” said Makhathini. “When you are in your own school and achieving good results there, it’s like you are in your own bubble; then you come here and see what everybody else has achieved, it motivates you to do better.”

An aspiring advocate, Makhathini will be studying Bcom Law at the University of Pretoria. The youngster from Inanda said he is amazed at all that he has achieved so far. “I must admit that my mother was far happier than I was, I tend to internalise my joy but I am really happy with my results. I cannot wait to study toward my law degree and to the Class of 2025, keep pushing,” said Makhathini.

Open Air congratulated the Class of 2024 and applauded their top achievers who were among the 6 470 learners with special education needs who wrote the NSC exams.
