EThekwini employee nabbed with drugs, stolen firearm, cash

An eThekwini Municipality employee was nabbed with drugs, unaccounted cash and a firearm reported to be stolen, when police pounced at his premises on the Bluff last week. He remains in custody pending bail application.

POLICE officers from the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Drugs and Firearms Unit arrested a 51-year-old suspect for dealing in drugs and illegal possession of a firearm last Thursday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said, “A search warrant was executed in the Bluff area, at a residence of the suspect who is an employee of the eThekwini Municipality. During the raid, police recovered drugs such as rock cocaine, cocaine powder, mandrax and almost R20 000 in cash. Investigations led to his office where rock cocaine was recovered. The firearm which was found in his possession was reported stolen during an armed robbery in Wentworth in June 2024.”

According to SAPS statistics for this week’s Shanela Operation, 16 718 suspects were arrested and 129 firearms were recovered during the nationwide operation.

The high-intensity national operation led by the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, and other provincial commissioners, bagged 835 drug dealers in the past week – 2 282 suspects were arrested for being in possession of drugs and 129 suspects were arrested for the illegal possession of firearms. The majority of these suspects were arrested in KZN.

Also, 1 129 rounds of ammunition were confiscated this past week.

The suspect appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court last Friday and was remanded in custody. He will appear again today for a formal bid for bail.
