Berea SAPS cracks down on crime

Members of Berea SAPS are intensifying the fight against crime with regular patrols and stop and search operations conducted regularly within the precinct as a preventitive measure.

BEREA SAPS has vowed to amplify their efforts to rid the area of crime by increasing their visibility within the precinct and conducting regular stop and searches.

“All malls and busy areas are being patrolled and monitored,” said Berea SAPS spokesperson Captain Poobalan Naidoo. He said entry and exit routes to Berea are also being monitored in their efforts to reduce crime.

“Members are also monitoring and preventing any possible cash-in-transit crimes in the area. Visible and crime prevention policing is also ongoing. Stop and search are also being done to ensure Berea policing area remains free from any serious crime,” said Naidoo.

An operation was held on Friday, January 17, along Gladys Manzi Road in Greyville. Naidoo said they were checking for firearms, dangerous weapons, drugs, immigration violations and traffic violations. The Berea Station Commander, Colonel Hlengiwe Gcabashe, said operations will continue as usual on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal police reported success in their crackdown on crime within the province. KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said 15 294 suspects were arrested and 359 firearms were recovered in various operations. He said 5 158 arrests were for contact crimes, with 256 and 274 arrested for murder and attempted murder respectively.

“Those who commit crimes against women and children were also traced and 296 suspects were arrested for rape,” added Netshiunda.
