Double celebration for Mama Kunene

Mathabo Kunene of the Mazisi Kunene Foundation recently celebrated her 85th birthday in style while also basking in the success of the KwaHluzingqondo High School Class of 2024 who achieved a 100% pass rate. The school in the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal is sponsored by the foundation.

THE 85th birthday celebration of Mathabo Kunene, the wife of the late arts stalwart Mazisi Kunene, was one filled with happiness and laughter as the intimate gathering of friends and family enveloped the octogenarian with love and joy on Friday, January 17.

The event was a double celebration for Kunene and the Mazisi Kunene Foundation which was celebrating the 100% pass rate of KwaHluzingqondo High School on the South Coast, which is supported by the non-profit organisation. Guests including the likes of internationally renowned South African storyteller, writer, playwright, and actress, Gcina Mhlophe, began arriving early at the Mazisi Kunene Museum on Delville Avenue to celebrate the octogenarian who was greeted with songs and hugs as she arrived at her former home.

“This is truly a blessed celebration of a long and enriched life, because even after Baba (Mazisi) has ascended I still feel his spirit here all the time,” said Kunene. “I feel so full of life, but I am ready to step back because I have been going full throttle for a very long time while taking advantage of my good health. I have been blessed. I am very happy about where I am right now because I am a holistic person and I believe in myself. I am a visionary that was born of visionaries.”

Kunene said keeping her husband’s dream alive by supporting KwaHluzingqondo High School, which is in his home village in Amahlongwa, makes her feel fulfilled.

“The school went from a 33% pass rate in 2009 to 100% in the past two years. My children and I have kept our promise to Baba Kunene of elevating the lives of our people, starting from the village to the rest of the world. Through our involvement and with the help of Bidvest, the school now has a maths and science centre which is cultivating talent. They have truly made us proud,” said Kunene.
