Disadvantaged school benefits from mayoral awards

The mayor of eThekwini has congratulated the district’s Class of 2024 by recognising the top achievers at the Mayoral Matric Awards which saw the matriculants receiving bursaries, laptops, cellphones, and other gifts from various sponsors. The awards recognised schools that achieved 100% pass, most improved and top achievers.

ALL eyes were once again on the high achieving Class of 2024 as they were honoured and recognised by the eThekwini Municipality mayor, Cyril Xaba, at the Mayoral Awards on Friday, January 24, at the Durban ICC.

Most improved schools and those that attained a 100% in the National Senior Certificate examinations, within the eThekwini District, were also awarded by the mayor at the prestigious ceremony. There was an added category this year, as Xaba acknowledged the top achiever at disadvantaged schools.

“The commitment and resilience shown by the Class of 2024 gives us hope for the future of our country. Hope that the matric Class of 2025 will follow in their footsteps as they have demonstrated that it is possible to triumph against all odds,” said Xaba.

The learners received awards, bursaries, laptops and monetary prizes among other gifts from various sponsors that were in attendance at the Durban ICC. Among those who were congratulated by the mayor is Lusanda Sibisi from Isolemamba Secondary School in Umbumbulu, south of Durban.

Sibisi obtained seven A symbols for IsiZulu, English, mathematics, accounting, business studies, economics, and tourism. Her favourite subject is accounting and business studies. “I am going to the University of Zululand,” said Sibisi. “I’ll be studying towards a Bcom in accounting science and looking forward to it. I was really happy with the results that I got and thankful to all my teachers.”

Ayanda Ligugu Mkhize who matriculated from Adams College said she was grateful to her family and teachers for helping to realise her dream of attending the University of Witswatersrand to study actuarial science. She obtained eight distinctions in IsiZulu, English, mathematics, physical sciences, life science, accounting, tourism, and life orientation.

“I worked hard to achieve these results, attended extra classes at weekends and focused in class. To the Class of 2025 you also need to work hard and do not give up. Towards the end of the year it can be hard but stay focused and make sure that you reap the rewards of that hard work,” said Mkhize.

Since its inception 26 years ago, the Mayoral Matric Awards has seen close to 500 learners benefit from financial assistance. The matriculants are awarded bursaries to aid in their pursuit of higher education.
