Violent clash leads to early closure at Asherville school

A school in Asherville is making the social media rounds after video footage emerged of chaos erupting at the school, where learners were up in arms in a "racially" fuelled clash. The mayhem resulted in injuries and early closure of the school.

SOCIAL media platforms have been abuzz following the circulation of video footage of mayhem at Centenary Secondary School in Asherville on Tuesday morning.

The altercation allegedly started on Monday, and was said to be racially motivated (between black and Indian learners), resulting in a violent confrontation today. Three learners were allegedly wounded in the clash, and were later rushed to hospital.

On social media platforms people shared that police and numerous security companies responded and had their hands full trying to contain the situation. “A decision was made by the school principal to close the school, and parents were informed to collect their children.”

One comment read, “The fight actually started yesterday (Monday) and no parents were informed about it. So today the students decided to take the law into their own hands and started the fight again which actually caused more violence in the school and outside. This has become a racism thing now at Centenary Secondary School, among Indians and blacks. Things need to be drastically changed at that school.”

School principal, Douglas Gounden, shared a letter to parents this morning, notifying them of unexpected early school closure today.

The letter read, “Please be informed that due to circumstances that have arisen, lessons will be suspended for the day. Learners have been dismissed at 9:30. School will continue as normal tomorrow (Wednesday).”

He further urged parents to make transport arrangements for the children.

EThekwini District SAPS spokesperson, Captain Carmen Rhynes, confirmed the incident and said “no serious injuries were reported”.

She added, “It is alleged that today one boy was assaulted outside the school premises by other boys. We are informed he has no serious injuries. No cases opened as yet. Two other school children had scratches but no serious injuries.”
