MSC rises against hunger
Over 43 000 nutritious meals were packaged at MSC House in Durban on Saturday to be distributed by Rise Against Hunger Africa to early childhood development centres. The meals will feed 160 kids for five days throughout the year. MSC has called other corprates to rise to the challenge and beat their 43 000.
THE joy of making a difference in another person’s life was felt strongly at MSC House in Durban on Saturday, February 22, where members of the SAPS and Africa Global Logistics (AGL) joined forces with MSC staff to package nutritious meals for children in need and Rise Against Hunger Africa.
In the spirit of comradery while competing against each other to package the most meals, destined for early childhood centres (ECDs), the teams managed to pack more than 43 000 of their 50 000 target. The meals contain rice, soy protein, dehydrated vegetables, vitamins, and minerals. Gugu Hlatshwayo from Rise Against Hunger Africa said the organisation is on a mission to end hunger by 2030. The meals, packed by volunteers every month, are supplied to unregistered ECDs to feed and nourish their young learners.
“We do follow-ups with the centre to make sure that the meals are suitable for the kids, aged from zero to six years old. Without the support of corporates and CSI we would not manage to reach as many ECDs and people as we do. This is not a once-off feed, we also respond to disasters and people in need; we are always there to help when there is hunger,” said Hlatshwayo.

She confirmed that the enthusiastic group at MSC House managed to package 43 416 of their 50 000 target. “The 43 000 meals can feed over 160 children five days a week, for a whole year,” said Hlatshwayo. “Lunch will be catered for 160 children because of MSC and their volunteers who took their time to help package these meals. It is an amazing number – should we add any more ECDs to our database we know that we are sorted.”
Cheryl Naidoo from MSC applauded the team of volunteers and extended gratitude to them for taking their time to be part of the successful initiative. “We were privileged enough to have members of the SAPS Task Team and AGL who gave up their time to come and pack meals with us for hungry children,” said Naidoo.
She challenged other companies to take up the initiative and partner with Rise Against Hunger. “I can assure you that the rewarding feeling that you get afterwards is amazing. It is something that has to be felt; we are nourishing lives and saving children from hunger one meal at a time. We all have the ability to make a difference and I encourage corporations to do so.”
