World Down Syndrome Day celebration brings out talent

From karate to dance and modelling, individuals with Down syndrome and other disabilities had the opportunity to shine at the You’re Magical Talent Show on Saturday, in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day.

A TALENT show that was recently hosted by the non-profit organisation You’re Magical and the Down Syndrome Association in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day on March 21 has been hailed a success.

The spectacular event was hosted on Saturday at Mitchell Park in Durban, drawing in a number of participants. From young and gifted karatekas to musical and dance numbers, the audience were kept entertained throughout the event which culminated with runway modelling led by Mrs South Africa finalist Tiana Marshman.

Trudy Chetty, founder of You’re Magical, hailed the awareness event as a huge success. She said, “Individuals with Down syndrome are not just individuals with a condition; they are unique, valuable, and contributing members of our society. They bring so much to the table, and it’s time we acknowledge and celebrate their strengths.”

Chetty, whose son Tristan has Down syndrome, highlighted creativity as one of many abilities that individuals with disabilities possess. “Many individuals with Down syndrome have exceptional artistic, musical, or dramatic talents. Their creativity knows no bounds, and they express themselves in the most beautiful ways,” said Chetty. “People with Down syndrome often have excellent memory skills, which can help them learn and retain information. Their ability to remember details is truly impressive.”

This year, World Down Syndrome Day was celebrated under the theme ‘Improve Our Support Systems’, which is a call to society and government to be more inclusive by giving people with Down syndrome more choice and dignity in everyday life.

“Let’s come together to create a world where individuals with Down syndrome are empowered and given the opportunities they deserve,” said Chetty.

Her call was echoed by the chairperson of the Down Syndrome Association, Jessie Mtshali, who urged for more funding and awareness for such initiatives. “More awareness and funding is needed for NPOs that work in the sector,” said Mtshali. “We have a number of Down syndrome initiatives and campaigns throughout the year that require for society and government to come on board to make it an even bigger success.”
