EThekwini awaits over one million visitors for Easter

Hotel capacity is expected to reach over 63% as eThekwini gears up to entertain holidaymakers during the long weekend, with security measures already beefed up ahead of the influx of local and international tourists.

ETHEKWINI is expecting over one million visitors over the Easter break who will contribute an estimated R2.5b towards the local economy.

The figures were revealed by eThekwini Municipality mayor Cyril Xaba on Monday when he unveiled the city’s Easter and winter campaign, themed ‘Endless Fun Season’. Xaba said the hotel occupancy rate currently stands at 63%, which is an increased rate from last year’s 50%, giving an indication of a bumper season for eThekwini.

“Durban is ready to host you,” said Xaba as he assured visitors of a fun and safe experience over the holidays. “Our team from Durban Tourism and Metro Police have pulled out all stops to ensure a fun-filled, safe, and incident-free long weekend. Our safety plans have also been bolstered by the deployment of additional professional security teams, armed patrol units and rapid response squads who are working closely with Metro Police to keep our inner city safe.”

Last week the city announced the deployment of dedicated teams as part of the inner city rejuvenation programme which are tasked with ensuring the cleanliness and safety of eThekwini. Xaba said this landmark initiative marks a significant step forward in enhancing the quality of life of residents, businesses and visitors while boosting the local economy.

“We are confident that with this campaign, we will be able to achieve our target of attracting about 1.3 million visitors over the Easter and Winter season. This will have a huge economic impact in the city as we anticipate a direct spend of R2.5b and the contribution of R6.1b to the GDP. We are estimating 11 000 job opportunities to be created during this period,” said Xaba.
