Watch: Beare begins his mental assessment
Murder accused Grayson Beare appeared briefly at the Durban Magistrate's Court on Tuesday before being transported to Fort Napier Hospital for assessment. The 30-day assessment will determine his fitness to stand trial for the murder of Halima Hoosen-Preston and the attempted murder of her son and husband.
FOLLOWING a brief appearance at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning, Glenmore murder accused Grayson Beare has begun his 30 days of mental assessment at Fort Napier Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.
Beare, who stands accused of killing Halima Hoosen-Preston and attempting to murder her son and husband on June 2, 2024, will return to court on May 15. It is alleged that Beare fatally stabbed Hoosen-Preston at her Glenmore home after she voiced her support for Palestine. Her 14-year-old son and husband were also repeatedly stabbed in the attack. Members of United for Palestine who were in court said they will not back down in pursuing justice for Hoosen-Preston.

“We are here today to ensure that the court processes are fair,” said the secretary general of the social activism group United for Palestine, Imraan Subrathie. “The accused has gone to Fort Napier for assessment and we will be following that very closely. We believe that the murder was premeditated, and the accused should not be released on the basis of temporary insanity.”

Subrathie, who was accompanied in court by the organisation’s president Abdool Valodia, called on the court to deliver justice for the slain Glenmore mother and her family. “He (the accused) must not be let off the hook and we are confident that the assessment will find him sane and fit to stand trial. Justice must be seen and the courts must hand him the maximum sentence for such a crime. This was a senseless killing, such intolerance will not be accepted in a diverse country like ours,” said Subrathie.
He added that the organisation will ensure that justice is delivered for Hoosen-Preston. “We will come back on May 15 to ensure that justice is meted out.”
As he stood in the dock, Beare was informed by the magistrate that he will either return to Westville Prison or be brought straight to court following his assessment.
